According to Variety, Jaden Smith, son of actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, is set to star in the remake of the 1984 film. The movie made Ralph Macchio and the late Pat Morita household names, and produced a four picture franchise that included 1994’s The Next Karate Kid starring a then unknown Hilary Swank.
The Karate Kid remake will place Jaden in the role of the abused youth, who learns confidence and self defense through martial arts. The producer of the original film, Jerry Weintraub is attached to the project, which will be co-produced by Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment. The film is set to start shooting next year overseas.
