When the Ancient and Mystical Order Rosae Crucis (AMORC) decided to buy a pair of mummy coffins from the Neiman Marcus catalogue back in 1971, they had no idea what a bargain they were getting. Not only were the coffins authentic (buried in Thebes around 600 B.C.), but to everyone's surprise, one of them still contained a mummy!
Not bad for $5,000.
The mummy was a priest named Usermontu, and he's one of several mummies I met last week at the ROSICRUCIAN EGYPTIAN MUSEUM in San Jose. The AMORC-owned museum also has galleries filled with ancient Egyptian, Sumerian, Persian, and Babylonian treasures, some dating back 5000 years. But for many people (including yours truly) the mummies are the magnet.
Gallery A is mummy-land, and it's a doozy. The main celebrity is Usermontu, whose desiccated body is displayed in the center of the floor. Take a close-up look -- if you dare -- at his feet (toes and toenails intact), arms and hands (ditto for the fingers), and head (includes one set of choppers and a tongue).
