A researcher from the University of Illinois College of Medicine will release a study later this month with the conclusion that performing chest compressions to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive” showed beneficial effects in a study. The song’s rhythm is 103 beats per minute, almost exactly equal to the 100 chest compressions per minute rate for CPR recommended by the American Heart Association. Since pretty much everyone knows the song, the researcher, Dr. David Matlock, thought it might be perfect as a way to keep the proper rhythm for CPR. His study consisted of 15 doctors and medical students performing CPR on dummies while keeping the song in mind. The study showed positive results in terms of the participants keeping the proper rhythm.
